Review of the Stihl GTA 30 battery-powered handheld pruner
This review has been in the works since CES (the Consumer Electronics Show) back in January, where I first learned about the Stihl GTA 30 battery-powered pruner.

Prior to today, I had never used a chainsaw, so after I received my review sample, I canvassed my neighbors to see if one of them had some branches that needed trimming. I found one who agreed to be my photography model.
My neighbor was doing a lot of travelling and we never could find a time when we were both available to do this. Finally, I decided that I was going to have to test this myself, at my home.

Since I know very little about chainsaws, I read the manual first. Near the beginning, it states: “Because a garden pruner is a high-speed, fast-cutting power tool, special safety precautions must be observed to reduce the risk of personal injury. Read this instruction manual thoroughly before use and periodically thereafter. Follow all safety precautions. Careless or improper use of the garden pruner can cause serious or fatal injury.”
Following that were nearly 14 full pages, in small type, of various WARNINGS (in all caps). Furthermore, the warnings continued on into the instructions for using this garden trimmer.
Whoa! This was not going to be like my usual product reviews of consumer electronics. If I was not careful with this product, I could kill myself!
Stihl tells us that “the STIHL GTA 30 is a battery-powered handheld pruner built for performance-oriented homeowners and DIY enthusiasts who want more from their tools. Featuring a 6″ guide bar and STIHL’s semi-automatic chain tensioning system, it cuts branches up to 6 inches in diameter with smooth, low-vibration precision. Its ergonomic, tool-free design includes intuitive controls, a fold-out handle, and glove-friendly operation – ideal for pruning, woodworking, and firewood preparation. With up to 180 cuts per charge and a lightweight, balanced build, the GTA 30 delivers professional grade results with the comfort and convenience expected from STIHL.”

“The semi-automatic chain tensioning system takes the guesswork out of adjustments.”

For those of you who are familiar with the Stihl GTA 26, the GTA 30 “provides 25% more power (400 W of power) and more than doubles the number of cuts of the GTA 26 (up to 180 cuts per battery charge), delivering reliable performance for demanding garden and DIY tasks.”
The “IPX4 Rating ensures the tool is designed and tested to withstand splash water, offering reliable protection in wet conditions.”
Even while wearing heavy gloves I was able to easily manipulate the trigger switch and trigger switch lockout — which “prevents accidental activation by requiring the switch to be fully depressed before operation.” ” The variable speed trigger offers adjustable power control for efficient trimming across different conditions.” The Stihl GTA 30 is truly easy to operate.

The Stihl GTA 30 set comes complete with two batteries, a two-battery charger, oil and a sturdy, hard carrying case.

A built-in battery charge level indicator on the GTA 30 displays remaining battery life. A GTA 30 Holster is available.

Stihl is a familiar brand that you have good reason to trust. According to the company: “Stihl is the #1 selling brand of gas- and battery-powered handheld outdoor power equipment in America among U.S. professional landscapers. STIHL is renowned for its legacy of innovation, durability, and performance. From chainsaws and trimmers to blowers and mowers, STIHL products are trusted by professionals and homeowners alike and are sold through a network of more than 10,000 authorized local STIHL Dealers.”
More good news is that, since I read the warnings, took them seriously and carefully followed the well written and illustrated instructions — including wearing heavy gloves and safety glasses, and removing the batteries except when I was about to use the Stihl GTA 30, I did not kill myself. I cut my nasty old 2×4 just about as easily as I would slice a loaf of bread with a sharp knife, and I did not suffer so much as a scratch.

I hope the “quickly made multiple cuts” were to the wood, not his body! (Joke)
David,
The wood carver seemed to know what he was doing, and had made lots of wooden animals of varying sizes that prove it.

Jan, I was amazed that a hand held “pruner” could slice through a 2×4. This IS a real chain saw! At my age, I wouldn’t be comfortable using such a potentially dangerous tool. Even with my hands fully protected, I’d probably slice my leg. Great review, but I won’t be buying one soon. David.
Thanks David,
I certainly can understand your reluctance to use a chainsaw. Even this small one is extremely powerful. I hardly had to press down at all and it cut right through that old, dry and probably very hard 2×4. Before I cut it, I secured it to a work table with several clamps.
If not for my need to try it out for my review, and without my chainsaw-experienced neighbor to operate it for me, I had to learn how to safely use it and cut the wood myself. I cannot deny that I was nervous but I cut it without any problems whatsoever. Per what I read in the lengthy instruction manual, I even removed the chain guard and oiled the chain before I did any cutting.
This reminded me of something that I saw a few months ago at Knott’s Berry Farm. Someone was using a hand-held chainsaw to carve animals out of pieces of wood. He made that seen almost effortless, as he quickly made multiple cuts.
